Just found this library to get ebook annotations work on mobile.
Looks like it also supports creating annotations out of the box!

Mobile for me, but desktop is also good.

Mobile for me. I use an ipad for books. However, there are very specific features I look for in my reader. Thus, the more ideal Memex feature would be the ability to simply export my highlights from my preferred epub reader app to Memex.

What are those features you look for in a reader, and which reader do you right now use to read and annotate ebooks?

Moon+ reader (Android) I use for reading and syncing the highlights to readwise. If that would work to memex too, I could switch to memex completely. But if I could read and highlight on the memex app, that would be great too.

Gotcha. What makes Moon reader so good for you in general? Any high-usage features you have in there?
Or is it simply because you can annotate and sync to readwise (and from there to other apps), but the reader is actually not that feature rich?

I have the pro version for years. For me it is one of the best epub reader apps for epub format on android. It connects with calibre (epub software) to get the books into the reader (and other ways). It works with gestures for reading (tip on the right side is next page,...). It renders in different themes. I can highlight and export my highlights in different ways (text, simple highlight export as image for social media in quote style,...). And it syncs immediately to readwise. I can change fontsize, or dim the light just by swiping down or up on one side, .. and some others. And there is a library. But being able to read and highlight via memex would be fine for me (highlighting and and finding this data again throug memex search is my main priority.
Amazon Kindle does not work for me. It restricts the amount of highlights I may do per book. This is a no-go for me.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to go in such detail.
That helps a lot.
Some options I am currently pondering about:
1. Trying to get to a good-enough version of an ebook reader that get the 80/20 of UX and features you need from Moon and that allows to unify your ebooks into Memex, which already syncs annotations also to Readwise. With our API more is possible.
2. Better integrate with Moon / Kindle to automatically pull in the highlights to make them searchable (defo easier to get something potentially useful working)
Key questions for me to make a better decision here are:
1. Do you sync your annotations from Readwise to anywhere else?
And how do you use the things that went from Readwise to these other apps or in Readwise itself?
2. What is the workflow you have when having those ebook annotations searchable in Memex?
Is it more for safe backup or do you cite your data in other places with it (e.g. via the Cite feature)?

Hello again,
At the moment, I use Readwise mainly for collecting. I can read epub books for instance and have the highlights in one place. I think it is not good in harvesting yet (search functionality). Since I found the https://sublime.app/ which is amazing by the way for harvesting the knowledge from oneself and community, I sync readwise to sublime. So Readwise for collecting and sublime for harvesting. Because I read many books in epub I need readwise (at the moment I use their reader app over moon+ reader because I always try to reduce the number of apps I have to use).
Memex I used for short-term content and researching topics. But memex (have also tried the first version years ago) is getting always better and better. And when the new search is implemented and I can also read and collect books on it I will be able to reduce my app load and quit readwise.
I could then use memex as a repository for all my collected knowledge. The cite function is very handy to extract knowledge. Memex is good for collecting and gets better for harvesting. For condensing and writing I use other software like dabble.
So for me memex is probably going to replace readwise sooner or later (as soon as search and epubs have evolved). And to answer your question: A epub integration into memex would be more helpful for me (just like with pdf´s). It just reduces the load of apps I need. Mobile if I could make a wish ;) (because I mostly read mobile).
Another good apps are Mem.ai because of its simple a.i. approach (good for collecting and harvesting). And fabric.so for collecting files.

Thanks again ❤️
"Since I found the https://sublime.app/ which is amazing by the way for harvesting the knowledge from oneself and community"
How do you harvest it there?

Maybe I must define what I mean with harvesting:
good search function so that I can find what I put into it easily (also if I am not sure which exact words there where)
output also with associations and related cards. Sometimes the outputs gives me new paths which I havent thought about before.
So with harvesting I mean getting the most out of my input data. In sublime (also napkin.one and mem.ai) every peace of information I put in is presented with other cards which are related to the one information. In the image below you see one card on top and the related cards which sublime adds from alone beneath. So I can click on another card and the process repeats. This helps me think.
And the second thing is I can just ask a question and sublime shows me all my cards (or if I choose also the community cards) which could iherit an answer. Here an example with the question: "How to cope with sadness?"
So I mean with harvesting to be able to find and even remix my input data to use it for writing or thinking. :)

I'd be keen to have this on Mobile, as eBooks are mostly consumed there.

Not a good idea. Reasons: this will require adding epub reader to Memex and it’s rather complex thing to do and even more complex to do correctly and with features most advanced users want. (I personally use Calibre companion + Moon+ Reader (I don’t use iOS and use DeX so this setup work with large screens) as backup reading system and Bookfusion as primary system. Both do annotation/highlight good). I sync my higlights to Readwise and later to Obsidian (Bookfusion also have direct-to-obsidian support now)

ability to provide multiple highlights into one saved item.
“Quote”,“Author/Entity” ; I love being able to add the page after or image clip for further context, as well as add additional citation information.
I have been struggling to build this myself, as i am a junior coder lol.

more important on Desktop for me. But would love to try it on Mobile (only if there is a feature parity, I need a fully feature Annotation)
