Integration with Tana, Notion, Roam and Remnote

Input needed:

  • Which tools are most important?

  • Details about your workflow

Features

  • Ability to have saved pages and annotations automatically added to either of those tools

  • Sync Spaces as [[WikiLinks]] into those tools so you keep your organisational structure

  • Ability to use custom templates for export

  • Ideally without any need for a local app like now needed for Obsidian & Logseq

Please support remnote. Transfer of highlights and annotations based on default cite format. Include a 2-way sync. Space converts into tags. Also, support for Images.

2-way syncing of PDFs and annotations with RemNote would be great!!!

This would be absolutely HUGE!!! This feature for Notion would be my #1 ask hands down.

Automation wouldn't be my main goal though. Automatically saving annotations into Notion is perhaps useful in other cases, but I would just look at as extra work unless they synced with each other. Ideally I would really like to look at Memex as the organized bookmark/brain dump tool, and Notion to be the place where I put my Memex notes to use. Here is a use case workflow I have been dying to achieve but haven't found the perfect tool for yet (Memex is the closest):

For my business I have to build a variety of different contracts. I currently use Memex to create a library of snippets from other example contracts both web based and PDF. I then head to Notion to create an outline of the document and start filling in the outline with my snippets using Memex's citing feature.

    Current Workflow:
Because the Memex extension only shows notes relevant to the current web URL (as it should). For this to work, I currently need to have two windows open (one with Notion and one with my Memex dashboard). I then have to move back and forth between to two to copy each citation I want to add, which is a bit cumbersome.

    How it could look:
Ideally, I would like to see the extension identify when I am using Notion and unveil an additional section (or perhaps under Cite) where you can select a space > it reveals that space's notes > and you can drag each desired note/cite into Notion as I am working.

More than anything I am dying to find a robust tool that can bridge the gap between the research phase to the creation phase. https://www.airstory.co/ and https://www.diigo.com/ Outliner feature are some great examples of this workflow in action. However, both tools are missing major key features.

The important features needed for this workflow:
    1. Bookmark tool: A robust but easy to use bookmark tool that works with websites and PDFs where example documents can be dissected and quickly & easily organized into idea buckets (ie. Memex)
    2. Document Editor: A tool that easily creates documents/outlines where copy can easily be moved around and reorganized. (ie. Notion)
    3. Snippet Library: A tool bar where the highlighted copy that was collected during the research phase can easily be filtered and dragged into the outline/document.
    4. Reference: Once the snippet is added, the ability to be able to go back and view its original source is crucial. (ie. Memex's Cite feature is amazing at this)
    5. Manipulation: The ability to take the inserted snippets and edit/rephrase the copy. (this is where Diigo fails and Memex is a clear winner).

When Memex citations are added to Notion they can be manipulated which is pure gold!
Now we just need an easier way to get them there.

Wow, thanks thats a lot of good info for me to get a clearer picture.
Also thinking along similar lines where Memex should be great for capturing and citing in your workflow.

Are you using notion in the browser or on desktop?
If in the browser what we could improve further is the overlay memex search you can open with cmd+f and then click on an item to Cite with the custom templates. Even though thats already smooth it's still a few clicks we can get down.
For example we could make it so that dragging an item from that search dashboard overlay dashboard will remove the overlay and allows you to directly drop it into any of your other app editors in the browser tab - using the custom template by default.

If on desktop I have to first think about more to suggest some initial ideas.

        I use Notion via browser.

Ahh yes! It looks like I overlooked the cmd+f feature. I had another extension blocking that shortcut. That is the idea, I do like that search modal. However that cmd+f modal still takes up the whole screen. Being able to view/pull the notes from a similar annotation sidebar (cmd+Q) would be the best application when working in Notion. Something along the lines of this:

        Just throwing ideas out there:
        1. The extension identifies when you are on a Notion.so url and the Cite area changes to something like the pictures.
        2. Currently when clicking Cite from a note it displays the the cite templates which is great, but specifically for this notion option reducing the number of clicks is ideal. If we could just set the template once via the Template option that already exists on the Cite tab or something like this to make it more obvious to new users. Followed by either the ability to drag/drop the note just as you suggested (or at minimum clicking Cite on a note in this area adds it directly to the users clipboard without the additional template menu clicks).

          @Oliver Sauter One additional thought:
I haven't yet played with this further. Currently my cite comes into Notion formatted as a Notion "Quote block". If there is anyway to use markdown within the Memex cite template that can change the notion block type when it is added that would be SUPER COOL!

PS: Memex Cite Templates are already awesome and one of my favorite features. Please don't feel like this is a complaint in any way. Just a fleeting thought on how to continue on to next level.

Being able to view/pull the notes from a similar annotation sidebar (cmd+Q) would be the best application when working in Notion.

Agreed, hope we can get there at some point in the near future.
We wanted to do this from the beginning but it was more important to get the search first running in the in-page context.
Goal is to get the search into the sidebar.

(or at minimum clicking Cite on a note in this area adds it directly to the users clipboard without the additional template menu clicks).

You can already shift-click on the CITE button and it'll take the default template (also in the search injection).

We're also almost done with the first improvements to the search that will make searching annotations easier: A unified results list for highlights and pages. Now they were separated and you had to first click on "highlights" in order to get to note results.

Though we won't have the new filters just yet, they are next in line.

Ooo thanks for the reminder about the Shift-click I forgot that was available. That will come in handy.

100% on the right track! Can't wait to see what the future holds. Thank you for the amazing tool. I have been looking for years to find it.

We're probably soon starting a project to build better native integrations with PKM tools.
I personally use Tana too so that'll be definitely on the list!

Would appreciate if you can lay out in a bit more detail how you imagine that integration to provide the most value for you? Whats the data you want to port over, in what structure, frequency? Think of the perfect workflow for you.

That'll give me a lot of data to make sure we'll hit yours and other people's needs the best.

Hey Oliver! Thanks for the response. So, recently I built some Keyboard Maestro Macros to "stream" annotations from Zotero to Tana. Essentially, my macros copy the annotation to the clipboard, ask for a comment (whether the highlight contains a key term or concept, makes a claim, supports a claim, etc.), then formats the copied text, my input, and metadata as "tana paste", moves over to the desktop application for Tana, and pastes it where the cursor is active.

I set this up so that I can more easily reference texts while I write—I might have skimmed something in the past, but when I outline a paper/essay, I like to revisit the text to make sure I've got the context and attribution right.

I think that this would probably be pretty hard given the way that Memex works, but being able to send highlights with metadata and input to Tana in real time would be really handy!

Have you discovered the "CITE" menus? You'll find them in the top right corner of the annotations sidebar, every page object, above the search results, or on every annotation card. There you can customise copy/paste templates to get your data out of Memex in a format of your choice.

There is a premade template for Tana already too.

You can copy/paste individual annotations, whole page with the annotations, or search results.

    Hey folks!

We’re nearing the start of this project and need you input.
There are so many options to start with so we are trying to understand which ones you find most useful and more about your workflows.

Taking that 30s survey would really help!

    Thanks!
